We have all been there.
You wake up at 5am and desperately need to get back to sleep, yet all of a sudden the million and one things you need to do that next day start rushing through your mind, not to mention all those completely irrational (yet totally possible) worries that make getting back to sleep seem completely impossible.
Then it’s the vicious circle, the more you think about getting back to sleep, the less sleep you actually get.
Well, according to a journalist at The Bright Side, there is a way around this incredibly frustrating problem.
This simple method has been used as a meditation technique for centuries in Indian yoga practices as a way to achieve complete relaxation.
It’s called The ’4-7-8′ method and here is how to fall back to sleep quickly and easily…
- Breathe calmly through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath for 7 seconds.
- Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds.
It’s really that simple.
Not sure it will work? Just test it out tonight!
And for the more cynical among you, here is a little background info…
This breathing exercise acts as a sedative, calming you down instantly. When you’re stressed or anxious, the amount of adrenaline in your blood increases, and your breathing gets faster and lighter. Deliberately slowing down your breathing in this way forces the rhythm of your heart to slow down.
This, in turn, helps to calm your mind by reducing anxiety. Once your central nervous system slows down, your mind will too.
Why not try it tonight when you get in to bed and let us know how you get on!
