A Dog’s Purpose is a new movie championing man’s best friend.

The story sees an adorable pup searching for meaning over the course of several lifetimes, with several different owners.

Take a look at the trailer for the movie. All these happy doggies all look more than happy to pose for the camera. Right?

But behind closed doors it was a different story for the stars of A Dog’s Purpose

This shocking footage shows Hercules, a young German Shepherd, forced into turbulent water despite clearly being terrified. TMZ obtained this video of a scene shot in a pool outside Winnipeg, Canada in November 2015.

After the crew soon shout “cut it” to rush to the animal’s aid. According to a source, director Lasse Hallström was present throughout the filming.

Animal rights group PETA called for people to boycott the film following the footage.

A spokesperson said:

“Dogs should be treated humanely, not as movie props.”

Amblin Partners and Universal Pictures have responded to the criticism.

They told TMZ:

“Fostering a safe environment and ensuring the ethical treatment of our animal actors was of the utmost importance to those involved in making this film.

“And we will look into the circumstances surrounding this video.”

Lasse Hallström has also spoken out about the accusations in a series of tweets:

But Lasse’s critics aren’t being silenced that easily…

So, where do you stand? Should filmmakers of A Dog’s Purpose have been allowed to treat an animal in this way? Should stronger regulations be in place? Finally, will you boycott the film?
