Q: I’m finding I’m having to run to the toilet a lot to empty my bladder, especially during the night, and I slightly leak as well when I can’t get there. I am really worried that the leaking may start to smell. What shall I do?
A: You may have an overactive bladder as this can cause urgency, frequency, leaking and getting up at night. Your bladder muscle keeps squeezing which causes these symptoms.
See your GP who will check a urine test, examine you and may ask for some bladder scans to do be done.
An overactive bladder (OAB) can be treated by reducing caffeine intake, losing weight, bladder retraining (helping you to spend longer in-between going to the toilet) and pelvic floor muscle strengthening.
Medications are also used to help. There are pads and hygiene products that can help with any leaking. Don’t feel you are on your own.
