Q: ‘I have had to change jobs recently and have taken on night shifts. I am finding these are really affecting my health; I have anxiety, poor sleep and find my eating habits have changed a lot.’
A: Night shifts can cause fatigue or tiredness which can make you more irritable, anxious and have an effect on your sleep patterns and relationships. There has been some suggestion they can increase the risk of digestive problems or heart disease long term. You are not alone; see your GP who can at least do some basic health checks and blood tests to check nothing else is causing this. You may want to talk to your manager if your GP feels it is affecting your physical or mental health, and discuss some practical changes or perhaps a different role or shift pattern.
