Q: I’ve started to notice a few dark spots on my face. I am guilty of sunbathing over the years but is there anything I can do to help even-out my complexion?
Anne Statham, 55, from Liverpool
A: Pigmentation can be anything from a sprinkling of freckles to larger age spots, and is caused by sun exposure or hormones. Whatever the cause, an uneven complexion can pile on years.
Exfoliation is great for helping to break up these clusters of melanin – the tanning pigment – known as age spots.
Sanctuary Spa 30 Day Youth Revolution, £22.50, is an at-home peel treatment that contains glycolic acid to remove a whole layer of dead skin cells and reveal a brighter, more uniform complexion.
There are lots of targeted treatments on the market, too, with natural lightening ingredients. Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, £39.50, is one of my favourites. It is pricey, but a little goes a long way.
Most of all, make sure you wear an SPF of at least 15 on your face every day to help prevent against future damage.
