Another reason why we love her!
An extra bank holiday 2017 is on the cards and it’s all thanks to Her Majesty The Queen! Get ready to celebrate her Sapphire Jubilee in style…
In February, the Queen celebrated her 65th year on the throne, making her the longest reigning royal to date. Therefore, one MP has proposed that we celebrate the occasion with an extra bank holiday in June.
Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell said it would be “a missed opportunity” not to have a national day of celebration commemorating the event.
Mr Rosindell explained his ideas to the Press Association, “It’s almost certainly going to be a very long time before any monarch gets anywhere near 65 years.”
“It’s the first time we’ve had any Sapphire Jubilee and if we let this go by, and don’t have some sort of national day of celebration, it’ll be a missed opportunity.
He commented: “It’s also for the young people. I remember the Silver Jubilee [in 1977] as a kid and learnt how important these national occasions are.”
He has suggested a day of events and celebrations similar to those of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
People across the UK celebrated the Queen’s 60th year on the throne with street parties. The Red Arrows flew over Buckingham Palace, and crowds gathered along the Mall. A Diamond Jubilee concert and pageant also commemorated the occasion.
So, will it actually happen?
Mr Rosindell’s plans for the extra bank holiday even seem to be winning over the Prime Minister!
“I have personally spoken to Theresa May about the idea and she was certainly positive in her approach to this. I hope the government will put some ideas to Her Majesty for her agreement and hopefully in June have a celebration.”
However, Rosindell said he did understand that the Queen is a “very modest” person and did not necessarily expect or want a grand celebration.
The Queen herself appears to think that a big celebration is not needed. In a statement about the royal anniversary, she said the achievement was “not one to which I have ever aspired”.
“Inevitably, a long life can pass by many milestones,”she added. “My own is no exception,” casually brushing off the huge achievement of serving 65 years on the throne.
Bring on the extra bank holiday 2017 we say, and raise a glass of champagne to Her Majesty the Queen!
