Despite the formalities and protocol associated with being part of the royal family, the Queen has insisted that her family are actually like many others behind closed doors. Speaking to the press in October 1989 she revealed, “Like all the best families, we have our share of eccentricities, of impetuous and wayward youngsters and of family disagreements.”
The public rarely see the more personal, relaxed, and ‘informal’ side to the Queen, however as she celebrates her 90th birthday, her family have come together for documentaries such as ‘The Queen at 90’ or ‘Elizabeth at 90’, and given us a rare insight into her private life. Queen Elizabeth’s children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne make special appearances in both documentaries, and the special bond they have with their mother is clear.
The royal family have had their ups and downs like any of us, and as the head of the family, the Queen has supported her children, and their children, through all of them. After a particularly difficult year when the Queen saw her children’s marriages fall apart and a fire rip through her beloved Windsor Castle, the Queen is famously quoted to have said, “this is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure. In the words of one of my more sympathetic correspondents, it has turned out to be an annus horribilis.”
