Of all the royal rumours that surrounded Princess Diana’s marriage and her turbulent time in the royal family, there was one that affected her more than most.
Diana could ignore most whispers and hold her head high despite the rumours. However, the question that Prince Harry might not be Prince Charles’ son devastated her.
Or so claims her former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, who has released a new book Diana: Closely Guarded Secret.
There have been whispers that Prince Harry is not Charles’ son for years. Instead, people have suggested that Harry could be the result of Princess Diana’s affair with former household cavalry officer, James Hewitt. Many people believe the rumours to be true because of his fiery red hair.
The tragic truth
Ken Wharfe claims that these rumours upset and infuriated Diana. Princess Diana only started seeing James Hewitt after Prince Harry was born. After she discovered Prince Charles was continuing his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
In the book, Wharfe defends Diana. He states that there can’t be any truth to the rumours and theories.
“I believe they were spread by people who called themselves friends of Charles, though whoever was originally responsible should be ashamed of themselves…both for peddling slanders and for being mathematically incompetent.
“A simple comparison of dates proves it is impossible for Hewitt to be Harry’s father. Only once did I ever discuss it with her, and Diana was in tears about it.”
Diana’s former bodyguard goes on to detail how she was driven into despair. She tragically once attempted to take her own life after realising her marriage was in crisis.
James Hewitt: on the record
Now, on the 20th anniversary of her untimely and tragic death, Diana’s former lover James Hewitt himself has stepped forward to lay the rumours to rest once and for all.
Speaking to Australian Channel Seven, Hewitt insists that the rumour was merely created to sell papers and magazines and is not at all true.
“It sells papers. It’s worse for him, probably, poor chap” Hewitt explains.
“Are you Harry’s father?” Australian host Melissa Doyle asked.
To which James firmly responds, “No, I’m not.”
Diana and James fell in love after she asked him to be her riding instructor in 1986. Speaking of how they first fell for one another, Hewitt revealed:
“She had an aurora of something special around her”
“It’s a gradual period and then, you know, suddenly you can’t get enough of each other or see each other as much as you want.”
The 57-year-old is now based down in Devon. He never married.
Finally, as the interview draws to a close, Hewitt confesses that he has no regrets about his relationship with the Princess.
‘No, I don’t regret that. I regret some of the things that have been caused by that but not that at all. No way,’ he said.
‘I think she was quite easy to fall in love with really so I think I can be forgiven for that.’
What can be said for sure is that Prince Harry has grown into a man his mother would have been proud of. His hard work for charities he believes in is a true testament to her. He is also carrying on her legacy. Not only has Harry worked to bring awareness to the land mine crisis, he also has continued Diana’s work in lifting the stigma surrounds HIV and Aids.
