The TV schedules go period drama crazy as the nights draw in and there’s a glamorous new kid on the block to shake things up for our favourite, Downton Abbey.
Set in the late 19th century, The Paradise revolves around England’s first department store. When young country girl Denise Lovett (newcomer Joanna Vanderham) takes a job in the ladieswear department, she finds herself surrounded by style and money – and becomes attracted to the shop’s owner, widower John Moray (Emun Elliott).
But watch out for her boss Miss Audrey (Sarah Lancashire), who is keen to keep her workers on the straight and narrow.
The show comes before ITV1’s Mr Selfridge (starring Corrie’s Katherine Kelly and Hollywood star Jeremy Piven) is scheduled to start, setting up another fierce rivalry between the channels with two very similar dramas.
The Paradise starts on BBC1 tonight (Tuesday 25 September) at 9pm. Are you looking forward to another period drama? Let us know in the comments below.
