Is there going to be a new Disney princess?

Although you may be familiar with the latest Disney princess, the strong-willed daughter of the chief in a Polynesian tribe, Moana; or you may have heard of Disney’s first-ever Latina princess Elena of Avalor, you will almost certainly have heard of the potential newest member of the Disney Princess family.

Following the tragic news that Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher had passed away, her fans and followers started up a petition campaigning for her well-known character Princess Leia to be immortalised by as an official Disney Princess.

The petition was started on Change.org by Cody Christensen. It has already amassed over 32,000 signatures. Fans say it would be a ‘fitting tribute’ to the woman who brought Princess Leia to life.

Cody Christensen wrote on the petition:

“After the tragic lose of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess.”

“This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie”.
