It is very rare that the Duchess of Cambridge receives any criticism. A hardworking royal in her own right, the mother-of-two acts as a Patron to numerous charities, as well as spear-heading initiatives for positive change around the subject of mental health and child development. Kate is kind, caring, and described by many as a breath of fresh air to what was becoming in many people’s opinion, a rather stuffy royal family.
However, in a shock revelation, criticism has been fired at the Duchess of Cambridge from a very unlikely source.
Former butler to Diana, the Princess of Wales, Paul Burrell has stated that the Duchess of Cambridge will never have the charisma or “magic” that Diana had.
“It’s not there” he stated simply.
During Diana’s tumultuous days in the royal family, she described Burrell as her ‘rock’. Speaking to Australian channel 9News, Burrell revealed:
“I met Mother Theresa. She had it. Pope John Paul II had it. The Queen has it. Diana certainly had it. Kate doesn’t.”
Careful not to make too many accusations about Kate’s character Burrell quickly added, “She’s a lovely, lovely girl … she totally adores her husband, they’re devoted to each other.”
“But that extra something, which you would call the ‘X-factor’, the magic quality, charisma, it’s not there.”
Burrell’s shocking comments come nearly four years after award-winning author Hilary Mantel made headlines for her harsh comments about Kate during a lecture at the British Museum.
“Kate seems to have been selected for her role of princess because she was irreproachable: as painfully thin as anyone could wish, without quirks, without oddities, without the risk of the emergence of character.”
In the eyebrow-raising talk, after which Mantel received much backlash from the public and criticism from high-profile figures such a David Cameron, the author also compared Kate to her late mother-in-law, Diana.
“She appears precision-made, machine-made: so different from Diana, whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture.”
Former Prime Minister Cameron called Mantel’s shocking comments, “totally wrong and misguided.”
Like Mantel’s comments, Burrell’s claims have also received backlash from the public.
