It’s the thrilling US series that had us all talking earlier this year and now Homeland has swept the board at the Emmy Awards in LA.

As well as taking the award for best drama series, the show’s stars Damian Lewis and Claire Danes won the awards for best actor and best actress in a drama series. The show also won awards for best writing, casting and picture editing.

‘I’m one of those pesky Brits, I apologise,’ said Damian on his win. ‘I don’t really believe in judging art, but I thought I’d show up just in case!’ Damian’s pregnant co-star Claire thanked her husband and ‘baby daddy’ Hugh Dancy in her speech.

Downton Abbey had a disappointing night, having won just three of the categories it was nominated in. Dame Maggie Smith bagged the award for best supporting actress, while the period drama also took the prizes for hairstyling and music composition.Meanwhile, Sherlock missed out as Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman lost their acting categories.

The second series of Homeland is scheduled to start on Channel 4 on Sunday 7 October – we can’t wait! Highlights from last night’s Emmy Awards will be show on 5USA tonight at 10pm.
