Hugh Bonneville as the Earl of GranthamWhile Downton Abbey has proved a huge success on both sides of the Atlantic, the show’s creator Julian Fellowes has decided to set his next series in the States.

Called The Gilded Age, the period drama will be set in 19th century New York and follow the ups and downs of a wealthy American family.

‘This was a vivid time,’ says Lord Fellowes. ‘With dizzying, brilliant ascents and calamitous falls, of record-breaking ostentation and savage rivalry – a time when money was king.’

The show will be broadcast on US channel NBC, which previously declined from buying the rights to screen Downton Abbey and lost out to rival channel PBS.

Meanwhile, us lucky Brits still have this year’s Christmas special to look forward to – yippee!
