This is so touching...
Wedding ceremonies rarely leave a dry eye the house. But for one couple their big day took an extra significance, as the moment they said ‘hello’ as a couple they had to bid ‘goodbye’ to their much loved family pet.
Kelly O’Connell first met 12-week-old black lab named Charlie when she worked at an animal shelter. While Kelly wasn’t looking for a four-legged friend at the time, she was soon won over by Charlie’s charms.
“He came in, and I was like, ‘Yup. I’m taking this puppy home,’” Kelly said.
As their bond began to grew, and the years passed, Kelly soon made room for another love in her life. Like Kelly, James Garvin was also a vet. Soon they pair were making plans for a September wedding, and naturally they wanted the now 15-year-old Charlie to have a starring role.
Sadly Charlie had been diagnosed with a tumour earlier this year, and had five seizures in the week before the couple’s big day.
Kelly then made the heartbreaking decision to put Charlie down. Miraculously Charlie made a turnaround during the week of the wedding.
He “seemed like a whole new dog,” Kelly said.
Wearing a floral headdress Charlie walked proudly down the aisle with his mum and dad. Unfortunately he couldn’t make it back, with Kelly’s sister having to pick him up and carry him back.
Despite this setback the wedding party were so proud of what Charlie achieved. James kept on repeating “You made it, buddy, you made it,’” Kelly added.
Sadly the story – which was shared on the photographer’s Facebook page – doesn’t have a happy ending. Just over a week later (September 9th), Charlie was put down. He died surrounded by family and friends in front of the fireplace at home.
“It was a phenomenal 15 years. That’s for sure,” Kelly said.
