Did you know that the way your dog sleeps reveals a lot about their personality? It also reveals whether your pet is a happy and contented pup, and how comfortable they feel around you and in your home.
A dog personality?
Scientists Svartberg and Forkman (2002) identified the main variables in a dog’s personality to be playfulness, curiosity/fearlessness, a ‘desire to chase’, sociability and aggressiveness. Not everyone believes it, but different dogs can have very different personalities – even if they’re from the same breed!
You get to know a dog personality through your pet’s expressions, whines, tail wags, reactions and more, and you can tell a lot about them from the way they sleep!
How does it work?
There are physical cues in the way our pups sleep that reveal different dog personality traits. In the images below we look at some of the most common sleeping positions that dogs everywhere adopt, and what this reveals about their personality. Website Little Things comments, “Very interestingly, “outdoor” and “indoor” pups assume very different sleeping positions. In addition, every dog will choose to rest in a different position that will allow them to do many things, from conserving body heat to jumping quickly into action.”

The side sleeper
This is apparently a dog’s most peaceful, rested position, which tells you your pup is low maintenance, comfortable and happy. Dogs who sleep like this are known to be happy-go-lucky and more loyal than most.
Dogs who sleep flat on their backs are trying to cool themselves down quickly, so they’re probably active and warm throughout most of the day. Legs in the air means happiness, security and relaxation. Your dog is also self-confident, and adapts easily to new situations.
With their limbs spread out, it’s easy for them to spring into action, which says a lot about the super pup. He’s motivated and has lots of energy.
The tummy curl
Dogs in this position aren’t quite as relaxed as others, as the position doesn’t allow for a truly deep sleep. However, this could just mean that your pup is always ready for action. Gentle, timid and shy are the characteristics of this pooch!
The ‘snuggly fox’
In this curled up position, your dog is conserving heat and protecting themselves. Dogs who sleep like this tend to be super sweet and gentle.
The crazy legs
A dog sleeping on its back is at its most vulnerable, so this position means your dog is comfortable, laid back, but may have an independent streak.
