Green energyQ: What is the new Green Deal and can it save me money?

A: The Green Deal is the Government’s new initiative to make the UK much more energy efficient. From 28th January 2013, households in England and Wales who use the Green Deal to make paid improvements, such as loft insulation, solid wall insulation and replacement windows, will qualify, and if you’re quick off the mark you could claim back up to £1,000.

There is a £125 million pot up for grabs and the Green Deal Cashback Scheme is a first-come, first-served offer, so the more work households have done, the more cash back they could receive. The key to getting the cash back is to have a Green Deal assessment carried out on your property, then install some or all of the improvements recommended by an authorised Green Deal Provider.

The best offers are available first, so you should act fast once the scheme opens in January because cash back rates may reduce after that. For more info, visit decc.gov.uk.

The Scottish Government has announced details of a separate home energy efficiency incentive scheme for Scotland.
