Doctor Q&A: Worried about my daughters eating habits

Q: I’m worried my teenage daughter isn’t eating properly. She picks at food and has a negative image of herself. I don’t want her to develop anorexia. What can I do to help her enjoy food?

A: You have been a great parent already by thinking about this.

Anorexia is when someone tries to keep their weight as low as possible by restricting what they are eating and starving themselves.

It can be serious and sometimes fatal. Symptoms can include avoiding meals, repeatedly weighing themselves or having a poor body image.

The key is to get help early and ask for a specialist opinion. Have a look at B-eat for some local help and ask your GP.
