Doctor: How do i help myself

Q: I am 42 and recovering from a heart attack which seemed to come from nowhere and has scared me so much. I’m trying to get my life back to normal, but find  I am constantly anxious about everything. What can I do?

A: You are not alone; many of my patients have similar feelings of anxiety after a serious illness.

Having a heart attack not only means new medications, more hospital appointments and a change in lifestyle, but also affects your levels of anxiety. Health anxiety and depression are common.

The key is to get good support from family and friends and your local cardiac rehabilitation unit. Ask your GP for help and consider cognitive behavioural (talking) therapy to help change how you think.
