Q: I have smoked for 20 years now and my children keep telling me to stop. I have just become a grandma and that has really made me think. How can I do it?’
A: Firstly, well done for wanting to stop. Giving up smoking at any age has been shown to be of benefit. The first step is for you to see your GP for support and advice and I suggest you also have a look at www.smokefree.nhs.uk.
This guide helps you realise why you should stop and gives you practical steps to do so. Joining a local group is more effective than doing it alone and there are patches, tablets or gum to help.
Your GP can also advise you about tablets which may help. Set a stop-date, list why you want to stop and good luck!
