If you’ve ever felt a little ridiculous greeting your littlest ball of fluff with a few ‘coochie coochie coos’ then you can worry no more. Science has just proved that baby talk is to puppies what wine is to a hectic day at the office – soothing, soothing, soothing.
A new study in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B has revealed that our four legged friends are more engaged when spoke to in a cuter, high-pitched voice, rather than a more serious adult tone. Study participants were asked to say the following phrase while looking at pictures of both puppies and adult dogs:
“Hi! Hello Cutie! Who’s a good boy? Come here! Good boy! Yes! Come here, sweetie pie! What a good boy!”
And what did they find? Well, unsurprisingly, that volunteers increased their pitch when looking at the pics of oh-so-adorable pups. And when researchers played the recordings back to fur babies young and…well…a little older, they found that they just couldn’t get enough! In a fact puppy (meaning extreme baby talk) voice got those little ears perked up like nothing else. And the good news is that adult dogs are also just as happy with either tone!
