Stephen Fry admits to trying to commit suicideStephen Fry has revealed he tried to kill himself while working abroad last year, but was saved by a producer who found him in his hotel room.

The comedian, 55, has bipolar disorder and is the president of mental health charity Mind. He said he made the attempt while filming, adding that it was ‘a close-run thing.’

‘I am the victim of my own moods, more than most people are perhaps, in as much as I have a condition which requires me to take medication so that I don’t get either too hyper or too depressed to the point of suicide,’ he told an audience on Monday night.

Stephen also added: ‘I would go as far as to tell you that I attempted it last year, so I’m not always happy – this is the first time I’ve said this in public… I took a huge number of pills and a huge (amount) of vodka.’

Denise Welch also spoke about her experiences with depression on Loose Women today following Stephen’s revelations. She said her own depression has at times been so bad she has been unable to speak, but with the right medication and support such episodes are becoming less frequent.
