Will Russell Crowe get back in the leather skirt?
If you fantasise about Russell Crowe in his old Roman leathers, then get excited because a new Gladiator movie could be in the works.
Director Ridley Scott told Entertainment Weekly that he really wants to shoot another Gladiator film. He’s also interested in getting Russell Crowe back in his starring role again- and who could blame him? No one works a sword like our main man Russell!
In the 2000 original he played brooding Roman soldier, Maximus, working his way through the ranks as a gladiator to avenge the murders of his wife and child. He spends much of the film fighting in the gladiators’ arena, showcasing his glistening muscles and an impressive selection of leather skirts. (We can only hope that the new film features more of this!)
Although we’re excited at the prospect of seeing Russell Crowe back in the role – there’s one small problem. Maximus died at the end of the original epic! Well, Ridley Scott hasn’t forgotten that. It turns out he has already worked out a plan for the character’s resurrection:
“I know how to bring him back. I was having this talk with the studio—‘but he’s dead.’ But there is a way of bringing him back.”
We certainly hope there’s a way to bring him back from the dead and back to our screens!
Let’s just take a minute to appreciate these four words: Russell Crowe gladiator comeback!
However, its worth mentioning that Russell’s return to the role of Maximus is not yet confirmed.
“Whether it will happen I don’t know,” Scott commented on the possibility of Russell’s return to the franchise.
“Gladiator was 2000, so Russell’s changed a little bit. He’s doing something right now but I’m trying to get him back down here.”
Fingers crossed that he decides to get on board! We certainly can’t imagine anyone else as Maximus.
Russell has previously shown interest in taking up his role again, or at least revisiting the Gladiator universe. He once pushed for a sequel that would follow Maximus’ journey “traversing through the afterlife.”
We don’t know whether the new film will pursue that plot line, but as long as Russell’s involved, we’re happy.
