Prince William and Prince Harry have revealed their plans for a Princess Diana statue that will take pride of place in the grounds of Kensington Palace as a tribute to their late mother. It is also reported that the Princes have commissioned two TV programmes about their mother that will air this year, 20 years after she was killed in a tragic car accident.
At the request of The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, a statue of Princess Diana of Wales is to be placed in the public gardens of Kensington Palace.
The specially designed statue of Diana will be on public display from the end of this year. Prince William and Harry explained via an official statement that they had decided the statue would be a fitting way to pay tribute to their mother on the 20th anniversary of her death.
In a joint statement the Princes revealed, “It has been twenty years since our mother’s death and the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue” the statement read.
“Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.”
The statue will be paid for by ‘privately raised funds’.
A date for the official unveiling of the statue is yet to be announced. However, in the official statement Kensington Palace revealed, “it is hoped that this will occur before the end of 2017.”
The statue’s design and sculptor will also be announced in due course.
In addition, the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have also commissioned two TV programmes to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of their mother. The programmes will take the form of documentaries. The much anticipated documentaries are set to be aired on the BBC and ITV later this year. It is thought that during the programmes both William and Harry will pay personal tributes to their late mother.
Kensington Palace are also celebrating Princess Diana’s life this year. The Palace has opened a special exhibition to the public. The temporary exhibit looks at Princess Diana’s iconic fashion sense. Read more about it HERE.
