The singer is on Simon Cowell’s wish list to replace Nicole Scherzinger, in case negotiations with the former Pussycat Doll fall through.
Nicole, who made her debut on the X Factor panel last year, has yet to sign on the dotted line reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.
The singer is due to release a new album in November which she’ll need to promote while carrying out her duties on the live shows.
Mel, 37, is no stranger to talent shows, having worked on both Australia and America’s Got Talent and as a guest judge during the audition stages of last year’s show, so it would make sense for her to be offered the job.
If she takes on the role Mel will most likely be sitting besides Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne, who are all said to be close to signing contracts for the new series.
