We’re used to hearing baking legend Mary Berry give her opinion on contestants’ soggy bottoms and chewy dough on The Great British Bake Off, but now she’s hit out about the state of the ice cream industry.
‘Budget ice cream is all air and synthetic,’ she says in an upcoming episode of The Great British Food Revival, on BBC2. ‘It has an enormous number of ingredients that don’t bear any relation to proper ice cream. The stuff of childhood bliss has changed completely in my lifetime.’
She adds: ‘People realise that it is more expensive to buy the best – but, trust me, it is absolutely worth it. It is made from the finest ingredients.
Or you can make your own. It’s not difficult. It is actually great fun. All you need is egg yolks, sugar, milk and cream. Simple.’
You can find one of Mary’s own recipes for ice cream here.
