15 minutes into the episode it looked like the killer was Joe Miller, husband of Detective Sergeant Miller, played by the incredible Olivia Colman. But with another 50 minutes to go (minus the ads!), was there going to be a final twist?
No, it was Joe but during the rest of the programme the story unfolded as to what drove this man to strangle the son of a friend in a fit of rage.
Writer and creator Chris Chibnall explained his decision to reveal the killer early on in the programme by saying: ‘Broadchurch has a whodunnit aspect, but the point is that you should be able to watch this show more than once. Even when you know the ending you can go back and rewatch as a drama.
The great news is, it was announced by ITV at the end of the programme that a new series has been commissioned. Hurrah!
Facts & figures:
– 33.5% of viewing public watched the finale last night.
– Broadchurch’s overnight audience of 8.73m was highest of the series. Peak of 9.28m came between 9.05 and 9.10pm.
Of course we have to mention David Tennant – how fantastic was he as DI Hardy? Missing him already? We can tell you he is starring in The Politician’s Husband on Thursday, 9pm BBC2!
