After a frenetic hour spent fiercely debating the issues of the day with her Loose Women colleagues, Andrea McLean likes to hear the calmer sounds of birdsong while doing a bit of digging at her home in Surrey.
‘Gardening has been really good for me,’ Andrea tells Woman’s Own.
‘Work keeps me very busy and so do the kids [Amy, six, and Finlay, 11] so gardening is something that I can focus all my attention on – it helps me get through.’
Andrea, 43, will spend the festive period at home with her daughter Amy, her child from her second marriage to Steve Toms, which ended last Christmas.
Finlay, meanwhile, will be with his dad, Andrea’s first husband Nick Green. She’ll also tread the boards in her first ever panto, playing the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella in Redhill, Surrey.
The Loose Women gang are enjoying an off-screen break but will return in the New Year. Plenty of time for Andrea to attend to her herbaceous borders then.
‘The main reason I enjoy gardening is because it’s just me being me,’ she adds. ‘I don’t have to dress up or look nice to do the garden. Your plants don’t care what you look like!’
